The Government Middle School (GMS) Daklane in Kohima, Nagaland, has been officially upgraded to a high school, 72 years after its establishment. This significant development allows students to pursue education up to Class 10, enhancing accessible learning opportunities in the region. State ministers celebrated the upgrade, emphasizing the vital role of government schools in providing quality, free education.

A Historic Upgrade for Kohima Education

The Government Middle School (GMS) Daklane in Kohima, Nagaland, has achieved a significant milestone, officially upgrading to a Government High School (GHS). This transformation comes 72 years after its initial establishment as Daklane Government School in 1954. Previously serving students from Classes 6 to 8, the institution can now accommodate students up to Class 10, addressing a long-felt need for expanded educational access in the heart of Kohima.

Leaders Emphasize Role of Government Schools

The upgradation ceremony was attended by prominent state officials, including Women Resource Development and Horticulture Minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse and Advisor for School Education & SCERT Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome.

  • Minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse described the day as “auspicious” for the town, highlighting Daklane Government School as one of Kohima’s oldest educational institutions, which was first upgraded to a GMS in 2002. She underscored the critical role of government schools in offering accessible and free education, particularly for families from diverse economic backgrounds. Kruse also commended the state government led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for its initiatives in strengthening educational infrastructure.
  • Advisor Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome acknowledged the upgrade as a “new beginning” and a reflection of ongoing efforts to bolster government schools across Nagaland. He stressed the importance of shifting public perception towards government institutions, noting that many families, despite financial constraints, often choose private schools.

Expanding Educational Horizons

The newly upgraded Government High School Daklane is set to provide enhanced educational opportunities. In 2026, the school has welcomed 22 students into Class 9, contributing to a total student strength of 204. Supported by a dedicated team of 24 teachers, the institution aims to foster a competitive learning environment. Officials urged students to maximize these expanded opportunities and encouraged teachers to uphold their responsibilities with dedication and sincerity, viewing education as a vital investment in the future.
