Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and PM’s Economic Advisor Sanjeev Sanyal advocate for significant education reform in India. They emphasize the urgent need for universities to become more industry-friendly by revamping syllabi, integrating practical learning, and leveraging online education and AI to improve student placements and foster self-reliance.
Transforming Indian Higher Education for Industry Relevance
In a recent education summit held in Kolkata, Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar and Sanjeev Sanyal, member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, emphasized the critical need for Indian universities to become more aligned with industry demands. Their call to action aims to significantly improve student employability and foster a more practical, skill-oriented learning environment across the nation’s higher education institutions.
Prioritizing Practical Skills and Employability
Both leaders highlighted that current academic curricula often fall short in preparing students for the modern workforce. Sukanta Majumdar, drawing on his experience as a botany teacher at Gour Banga University, urged vice-chancellors to revise syllabi to directly address industry needs, thereby ensuring graduates secure better placements.
Sanjeev Sanyal reinforced this, advocating for an education system rooted in practical application. He noted a prevailing trend where employers often favor candidates with real-world experience, such as sales, over fresh graduates who lack any prior job history. This preference underscores the urgency for universities to integrate more experiential learning.
Embracing Modern Learning Approaches and Technology
Sanyal further elaborated on the evolving landscape of education, proposing several forward-thinking changes:
- Campus Transformation: Large, traditional campuses may no longer be essential. A shift towards smaller, more interactive learning environments could enhance student engagement and collaborative learning.
- Rise of Online Education: Acknowledging that individuals under 30 increasingly prefer online learning, universities should adapt to this trend, offering flexible and accessible digital educational pathways.
- AI Integration: Encouraging the immediate adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is crucial. Teachers must also upgrade their skills to effectively utilize these new tools and prepare students for an AI-driven future.
- Work-Integrated Learning: Students should be encouraged to work while they study, echoing models like chartered accountancy apprenticeships. This approach enables them to gain practical experience and contribute to their own education financially, reducing reliance on parental support.
Ensuring Accountability and Relevance
A key concern raised by Sanyal was the potential entry of foreign universities into India. He cautioned against allowing their operation without proper oversight, stressing that their ideologies might not always align with the Indian context. Ultimately, he argued, universities must demonstrate the relevance of their degrees and actively help students achieve self-reliance in their careers.
